The Sanlam Group Awards

Applications are now being accepted for the Sanlam Group Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism, a prestigious recognition that has been celebrating outstanding business journalism in Africa since 1974. This competition is open to African journalists working in print, online, radio, and TV media, based on the continent and contributing to African news organizations.In the 2022-2023 edition, the Sanlam Group Awards welcomes Santam as a co-sponsor and introduces a new category focused on Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues. This addition reflects the increasing global significance of sustainability considerations, encompassing corporate governance, investment decision-making, government policies, and the impact of extreme weather conditions on society and business. The ESG category acknowledges the growing importance of these factors in various aspects of public and private sectors.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must meet following criteria:

  • The competition welcomes participation from African journalists engaged in print, online, radio, and TV media, provided they are based in Africa, affiliated with an African news organization, and showcase their journalistic work on the continent.
  • Specifically, the Business/Companies, Economy, Financial Markets, and Consumer Financial Education categories are exclusively open to South African journalists working in print and online media.
  • On the other hand, the African Growth Story, Broadcast: Audio, Broadcast: Video, ESG: Business and the Environment, and ESG Business and Society categories are accessible to African journalists in Africa.
  • These journalists must be associated with an African news organization and practice journalism across print, online, radio, and TV on the continent.
  • The winners of the premier awards, including Best Newcomer, Lifetime Achievement, and Sanlam Group Financial Journalist of the Year, must be participants who have formally entered the competition. The independent judging panel will then select the winners based on their merits.

  • Broadcast: Television/Video (in financial news reporting)

The Business/Companies, Economy, Financial Markets, and Consumer Financial Education categories are exclusive to South African journalists in print and online media.

  • The African Growth Story, Broadcast: Audio, and Broadcast: Video, ESG: Business and the Environment, and ESG Business and Society categories are open to African journalists working on the continent, practicing journalism in print, online, radio, and TV.
  • The African Growth Story category, established in 2013, acknowledges outstanding business journalism focusing on the continent’s growth in investment, infrastructure development, economic progress, and related topics.
  • The stories should embody a Pan African perspective and a theme of regional integration.

Top Awards:

  • Best Newcomer
  • Lifetime Achievement
  • Financial Journalist of the Year

The winners in each category receive a prize of R 30,000. The Best Newcomer winner is awarded R 25,000, and the overall winner, the Financial Journalist of the Year, receives R 40,000. Additionally, all winners receive a certificate of recognition.
