The LunaRecycle Challenge

NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge invites innovators to develop sustainable recycling solutions for future human space missions. This competition focuses on recycling various waste streams on the lunar surface, aiming to minimize the need to return waste to Earth. Participants are encouraged to create solutions that reduce resource inputs, toxic outputs, and hardware size while maximizing recycling efficiency. The challenge has two tracks: Prototype Build for hardware designs and Digital Twin for innovative digital models simulating recycling processes. The solutions must focus on handling waste effectively during a 365-day lunar mission, prioritizing sustainability.

Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the LunaRecycle Challenge are:

  • Open to all individuals or teams worldwide.
  • Participants must design hardware or digital twin models for recycling waste in a lunar mission.
  • Submissions should focus on minimizing waste, resource inputs, and system size.
  • Entrants must create solutions that align with NASA’s sustainability goals.
  • The competition allows both physical prototype and digital twin track submissions.
